Unlikely Materials
10/30/2023
This self-portrait made by Thomas Deininger comprises dolls, shoes, broken computers, extension cords, broken toys, silverware, and junk into one art piece. As individual materials, these objects would be viewed as trash. However, when all the pieces come together, they form a beautiful piece of art. You have to look closer at the materials, textures, and shapes to see how they create unity. Similarly, for our third project in the studio, we are using unlikely materials to form our fungal textures. I am using things like cotton swabs, beads, gift toppers, red mesh packaging, etc., to make a surface that looks natural and looks like it is growing onto our first and second projects.
