Antonio Gaudi: The Architect Ahead of His Time

10/4/2023

In my Architectural history class this week, we discussed how unsustainable and unhealthy the AC is for the environment and how it has affected modern architectural designs. We looked into examples of architecture that incorporated elements such as screened-in windows, cross-ventilation, high ceilings, thick walls, and courtyards, which helped cool down the inside of a building without AC. One of these examples was Antonio Gaudi’s Casa Batlló. In many of his designs, he incorporated high ceilings with open windows towards the ceiling and the floor to ventilate the rooms. His ceilings sloped towards the open windows to guide warm air out. He was ahead of his time, and his designs were unique and different from the architectural designs made in the same period.
